Our Story
The Canada Bonsai website was officially launched on July 8, 2020 with one simple goal: to make a a wide variety of bonsai material available to as many people as possible across North America.
Our Location
The Canada Bonsai production nursery is located near Montreal, Canada, with additional housing and production nurseries located across Canada, Japan, and the USA.
Our Mission
Canada Bonsai is focused on working with plant varieties that are appropriate for bonsai, and ensure that they have been grown from their start with bonsai in mind.
About the Founder
Born and raised in Montreal, Derek’s interest in Japanese maples began 20 years ago and gradually transformed into a passion for maple bonsai and then bonsai more generally.
Today, Derek works with over 450 plant varieties, and specializes in maples, flowering apricots, and princess persimmons with a focus on propagation and early-stage development strategies.
Derek’s education is in the Classics with special interest in early Ancient Greece and a focus on Homeric poetry, working at the intersection of anthropology, linguistics, philosophy, and psychology. His ongoing research is concerned with the phenomenology of decision-making.
